Rules, Laws, and Ancient Art

13 October 2023

Infinity Charter School

Harrisburg, PA

Private Lecture

One of the most important things about art is what and how much it communicates. In this visit, Doc talks with students about prehistory and the advent of writing, including both hieroglyphics and cuneiform. The shift from image-based communications to abstract forms, like the alphabet we use today, is a big deal in the ancient world! Some of the ways these early forms of writing became more widely spread include the sharing of information about rules and laws. In this chat, we will focus on the Narmer Palette, the Stela of Naram-Sin, and one of the many Code of Hammurabi Stelae. By the end of the lecture, we'll have considered the ways we see the imagery of power -- physical and political -- continue from ancient through modern imagery, including the Lincoln Memorial. When the eighth graders visit D.C. later this year, they'll be ready to interpret this piece!
